Bar Hill Lodge

Girthon, near Gatehouse-of-Fleet

Led by a short, rough, unmade track and located along the edge of the beautiful mixed woodlands of Cally Woods and Fleet Forest, is Bar Hill Lodge, a picturesque and unique detached 19th-century cottage. The idyllic rural cottage has views of the rolling hills of Galloway - voted 'Holiday Destination of the Year' by BBC Country File Magazine. To the back, there is an enclosed lawn and wildflower garden with apple trees (and summer house, perfect for barbecues). In front of the cottage we have a lawn, with woodland garden, small bridges over a stream leading to a wildlife pond, with a sundowner deck.

After spending all his childhood holidays in the area, where his Scottish grandparents lived, Gordon brought me to Gatehouse soon after we met, in the early 1990s. I immediately fell in love with the area - it reminded me of where I grew up, in South Africa. We bought Bar Hill Lodge with a view to moving here when we no longer need to be in London.

Dogs welcome at £20 each.

Cycling through Cally woods

Off the beaten track

Here are some of our favourite places nearby. There’s something for everyone, in every season.

Cally Woods

Ash, oak, beech and sycamore all shelter a carpet of wonderful wild flowers. In early spring there are splendid drifts of snowdrops; later in the year the cottage is surrounded by bluebells. From the doorstep, there is a lovely half hour circular walk, taking in views of the Solway bay. These woods are home to barn owls (listen out for them from the bedroom!) red squirrels, buzzards and treecreepers. We’ve seen deer, foxes and even a badger! The mountain biking 7stanes cycle route passes through Cally Woods.

Sandgreen Beach

The cottage is only 2 miles from the nearest sandy beach, Sandgreen. You can also cycle here through the woods in about 20 minutes. This is a family friendly beach, with boating activities, paddle boarding and safe swimming. A little further away is Carrick, where this photo was taken in summer 2022. As you can see, even during a heatwave, it’s not exactly crowded! At low tide, you can walk to the island.

Gatehouse-of-Fleet

Your local town

In the late 18th century, Gatehouse-of-Fleet was a thriving industrial centre with cotton mills, shipbuilding, a brewery and its own port. Today the town has some interesting art galleries and shops selling local produce and crafts, as well as a good small supermarket, chemist, and post office. Look out for the monthly farmer's market and also the excellent fishmonger who visits the car park once a week. Nowadays there is a burgeoning programme of local music and cultural events at the Mill-on-the-Fleet (which also houses a quirky, labyrinthine second-hand bookshop!) and the Bakehouse.

Galloway Forest Park

the UK’s first Dark Sky Park

We are right in the middle of the Dark Sky Park, meaning that because light pollution is so low, this area is outstanding for star gazing.

A wild (cold!) swim or a picnic at Pool Ness waterfall on the Big Water of Fleet river, Upper Rusko, 4 miles from Gatehouse of Fleet.
